Welcome Home Part 9
Soft morning light easily herded Duo from his dream. Yawning, he sat up in bed and wondered what time it was. He looked to his left to find Quatre was finally asleep. He pushed off the blankets and walked over to the balcony. He wasn't sure what had drawn him there, but as he stood in the crisp morning air, he was glad that he did. He could clearly see Wu Fei, shirtless, by the pond. The strong Chinese boy was moving in slow motions the way that Duo had seen people in martial arts movies move. He often laughed at them figuring that it was only glorifying karate, and that no one ever actually did those exercise. Now as he watched the Preventer he found them neither funny nor mythical. . .in fact, he thought Wu Fei looked sexy participating in the exercise. Smiling to himself, he bounced back into the bed room, quickly dressed and dash down the stairs. He ran as fast as he could through the house and outside to the pond. He stopped far enough so that Wu Fei couldn't detect his presence just yet. As he continued to watch the Chinese boy from a closing distance, he became lost in thought. He watched the strong muscles flex with every movement. It was the first time that he realized how much Wu Fei had been training and working out since the last time they were together. He had felt the difference when they hugged at the funeral. . .and glimpse it when he was on the roof yesterday. . .but now it was fully exposed. Looking at him now nearly convinced Duo that it was possible that he could be stronger than Heero. . .but only by appearance. He was only a few feet from Wu Fei, and he didn't seem non the wiser of Duo's advancement. The violet eyes rested on the moving form, until finally Wu Fei turned to face him. Wu Fei appeared surprised by Duo's presence. "Now who's sneaking up on people?" He asked in a half teasing, half annoyed voice. "Sorry, old habits die hard." The American stated and earned a questionable glare from his friend. Somehow, he got the feeling that Duo was spying on him. He knew well, the braided boy's stealth abilities. "Are you now?" "Why wouldn't I be?" A smile pulled Duo's lips as he allowed the true feelings to seep through his words. "I believe you did on purpose." As Wu Fei spoke, he walked closer to Duo. Duo's heart started pounding wildly in his chest at the advancement. Wu Fei started to reach out to him, and Duo closed his eyes, waiting for the touch. . .however, he didn't feel one. As he opened his eyes, he found that Wu Fei was gone. Looking toward the house, he could see the Chinese boy walking away, with his shirt slung over one shoulder. As he stared at the retreating figure, he wondered if Wu Fei was just playing mind games with him. He ran after the figure, determined to tell him how cruel the last action was. . .but as he stood in front of Wu Fei, his nerve wavered. How could he stay mad at him? "What do you want Maxwell?" He sounded peeved, and all possibilities of confronting him vanished from the braided boy's mind. "Nothing." Duo answered and turned to head toward the house. Wu Fei stood still, watching his friend, wondering what that was all about. He wasn't blind to Duo's attraction to him. . .the problem was that he wasn't sure how long that attraction would last. He wasn't up for any kind of heart ache that could be prevented. Sighing, he followed his friend into the house. "Maxwell." Duo waved for him to keep quiet. Dumbfounded, Wu Fei walked over to the braided boy and peeked through the crack that Duo had the door pushed open. Trowa and Heero were in the sitting room. Both boys seemed uptight and angered at each other. "What the hell is your problem today?" Trowa asked venomously. Heero only narrowed his eyes at his boyfriend. "What do you think my problem is?" The frustration was thick in the Latin's stance, and words. "Why are you acting so childish all of a sudden?" "You're calling me childish?" Heero countered with a knowing look. That was the last draw. Trowa just turned and started to walk away. "Where are you going?" "You're impossible to talk with when you're like this." "Trowa." "We'll talk later." Duo pulled from the door before Heero realized that they were there. He looked up into the coal eyes. "What do you think they were fighting about?" Duo asked suddenly and Wu Fei shrugged. "I've never seen them argue before. . .in fact, I didn't think it was possible." "All couples fight Maxwell. That should be enough proof. . .where are you going?" "To talk to Heero. I have to find out what happened." Wu Fei shook his head in pity. "Always sticking your nose somewhere. . .aren't you?" He asked after the figure was already gone. As Trowa knocked on the door to the room that Quatre should have been staying in, he was a little surprised to find the blonde stepping out of Duo's room. "Good morning Trowa." Quatre greeted, still half asleep. "Why aren't you in your own room?" "I couldn't sleep alone." "So I'm guessing that you finally did get some sleep." "I had to practically black out from exhaustion. Did you know that the electricity is on?" Trowa shook his head. "I woke up and there was a light on in the bed room. Duo's already awake, so he probably authorized it to be turned on. How long have you been up?" "About an hour." "Something wrong?" "I told Heero that I believe what you said last night about the ghost. . .now he thinks I'm being childishly paranoid." Quatre looked down at the hard wooden floor. "I didn't mean to start anything between the two of you." "It's not your fault. I don't know what. . ." His words were cut short as Duo bound up the stairs. "Hey, the lights are on." "We know." Quatre smiled, knowing that he and Trowa could finish their talk later, when no one else would be around. "That means that the fridge is probably working. We should go get some real food." "I'll go with you." Trowa offered almost instantly. Quatre looked back at his friend. By the sound of his tone, he was eager to probably get away from Heero for a little while. "Tro, do you know where Heero went?" The green eyes glared at the shorter boy. "Last I saw him, he was down stairs." That's what Duo thought. . .but when he stepped into the sitting room, Heero was gone. He came up stairs, figuring that the Japanese boy had followed his boyfriend, but that didn't seem to be the case. "He didn't come up here?" "If he would have come up here, I would have said that he was up here." Trowa snapped and walked pass the American. "Don't get bitchy with me because you two are having problems!" Duo yelled after the retreating figure. Wu Fei stepped out of the house with intentions to repair the shingles that were ripped from the roof yesterday. He was a little surprised to find Heero and Trowa outside on the front porch. Even more surprising was the fact that they were arguing again. . .this time, Heero appeared to be on the defensive instead of Trowa. "Like it's my fault." Heero snapped. "He's your friend." Trowa informed. "Hey, I put up with Quatre because of you. What do you have against Duo any ways? He's never done anything to you." Just then Quatre appeared on the threshold. "Ready Tro-. . ." He looked from Heero to Trowa and back again. "Is this not a good time?" "It's fine." Trowa assured and headed toward the car. Heero narrowed his eyes at the Latin. "And where are you two going?" "Grocery shopping." Quatre answered once he realized that Trowa wasn't providing an answer. Glaring at the taller boy, Heero headed back into the house without another word. Quatre unlocked the doors and the two friends slid into the car. The blonde looked over at Trowa. "Are you okay?" "Yeah." "What were you fighting about?" "To tell you the truth, I'm not sure. He's been acting strange ever since he woke up. I don't know what's gotten into him today. It's almost as if he's someone else." "Does it happen to have anything to do with what happened last night?" "I don't think so. I don't see why he would get this pissed over something as foolish as believing in ghosts." "You really believe me?" "Yeah." "Why?" "Well. . ." Trowa proceed to tell the Arab everything that happened since the first night. "So what's going on between you and permanent bitch?" Duo asked when he finally found Heero coming down stairs. There was a look of confusion in the colbat eyes. "What are you talking about?" "You don't have to hide anything from me Heero. I know you guys were arguing earlier today." Heero stepped down the last step and stared into Duo's eyes, apparently, his quarrel with Trowa wasn't something he wanted to discuss right now. "When did we get electricity?" "Sometime this morning." "You didn't authorize it?" "No. I guess Wu Fei must have. He was up before me. Are you okay?" "I'm fine." Heero assured and continued to walk pass the American. Duo turned and followed him. "Are you sure? I mean. . .it's not like you and Trowa fight very often." "It wasn't really a fight. . .it was more or less a disagreement." "Well, what were you disagreeing about?" Heero hesitated a moment before caving. "He told me that he believes Quatre about the ghost. When I told him that ghost weren't real, he just blew up at me." "What did you say to him?" "I just said that it was childish to believe in ghost." "And he exploded?" Heero nodded. "Why?" "I don't know Duo." "He actually believes in that stuff?" "Yeah." "Surprise. I thought he was like you." "So did I. . .but then he told me the reason why he tried to remove the mirror yesterday." "Why's that?" "He says that his reflection was acting on its own." "What? You're kidding." "No. Though he admits that it could have just been his mind playing tricks, after what Quatre said, he fully believes that it's ghost." "That's weird." "I'm starting to worry about him." "Why?" "When we were arguing earlier. . .maybe it was just me. . .but I felt like we weren't really arguing. I just felt like it was someone else that I was debating with." "Well, it's not an everyday thing for you guys." "No. It's not. . .but there are times that we do fight, and. . .this morning was just, strange. It didn't feel right." "Maybe he was just play fighting so that you guys can have make up sex." Heero looked questionably at his friend. "I don't think so." ******** "Where the hell have you been?" Duo and Wu Fei looked up at each other at the angered voice. They walked over to the open window at the front of the house to witness Trowa climbing out of the car. Heero was standing several feet from the Latin, glaring at him. "With Quatre." "It takes you two four hours to buy food?" Trowa appeared confused. He never heard Heero use this tone before. . .in fact, it scared him. However, he didn't allow it to show. "The car got a flat on the way back." Trowa informed as Quatre silently started grabbing bags from the trunk. "You could have called Trowa." "I did try to call, but you had your phone off." "My phone is on, and it's been on all day." Duo and Wu Fei glanced at each other. The same thought was going through both their minds. Without speaking a single word, they ran from the room and dashed down the stairs. They tore from the house at the same time. Heero was glaring at the taller boy as if he had spotted a enemy to destroy. "Heero, why would I lie to you?" "Why don't you tell me? After all, that's what you did." "Actually, Heero. He did call you. He used my cell phone." Quatre interrupted. "I can show you were he made the call." He started to pull the phone from his holder, but the glare in the colbat eyes clearly stated that he didn't care. "What's gotten into you? You've been acting like a asshole all day." Trowa dared. "Maybe we should calm down." Wu Fei tried to soothe. "This heat has to be getting to everyone." Duo attempted as he stood next to Heero and lightly placed his hand on the Japanese boy's arm. It was smacked away roughly. "Tell me the truth Trowa. . .or it's over." "Heero. . ." "I'm not kidding." "I told you the truth." "Don't mess with me Trowa. I told you before, don't fuck with my emotions." "I'm not." Clenching his fists, Heero headed back into the house. Trowa watched the retreating figure a moment before running after him. Duo started to follow, but Wu Fei stopped him. "Give them time alone. You could make it worse." The Chinese boy advised. "Besides, I think Winner may need some help with the bags." Duo nodded, and turned to help his friend. Quatre stepped from the house to find Heero and Trowa by the fountain. Trowa was sitting on the edge of the ceramic basin, while he removed mud, leaves, and twigs from the spout. Heero stood to the left, not offering any assistants, for they were once again arguing. "It's not like I really had a choice." Trowa stated calmly. "What are you talking about? I asked you if you wanted to come. I never once told you that you had to." "Not directly. . .regardless if I said 'yes' or 'no', you would have come any ways. I wasn't going to spend three weeks alone while you're here." "Why didn't you tell me that when I asked you then?" "Because, at that time, you had already told Duo that we were going to help him. I might not like him, but it isn't right to say that you'd do something and then not do it." Heero appeared more frustrated than Quatre had ever seen him. . .in truth, he didn't see Heero as someone to get frustrated. "This isn't exactly how I wanted to spend my vacation time Heero." "Fine, you want to leave?" "No. I told you." "Then stop bitchin about it." "I'm not bitchin. You asked me, I told you." "So you're going to be pissed at me for the next three weeks." Trowa didn't respond, but there was an air shrouding him that told the answer. "Damnit Trowa. I just can't win with you today." Heero snarled and headed back to the house. He pushed by Quatre without saying a word to the Arab. Quatre watched him disappear into the house, then turned toward Trowa. "Are you okay?" He asked softly and stepped closer to his friend. "Fine." With that, Trowa threw the last of the clog into a bucket next to him. As he stood, ready to leave, water gushed from the spout, catching the Latin completely off guard. The force was unusually strong for a fountain, as it knocked Trowa out of the fountain and onto his back on the dirt road. "Trowa?" Quatre ran over to the taller boy and kneeled next to him. "DAMNIT! I HATE THIS FUCKING HOUSE!!!" Despite the situation, Quatre couldn't help but giggle at his drenched friend. Trowa sat up and glared at the blonde. "I'm sorry. I wonder why it did that?" "Probably after all those years of backing up, it finally released." Trowa answered and stared back at the fountain. A steady stream of water was pouring from the spout that he had just been sprayed with. "Are you okay?" "Yeah." He pushed himself to his feet and started walking toward the house. "Where are you going?" "To dry off." As Trowa entered the house, Duo appeared at the top of the stairs. "What happened to you? Wet tee shirt contest?" He laughed loudly. "The fountain squirt him." Quatre answered as he came into the hall. This statement brought about more laughter from the American. "The house is still getting its revenge on you, huh?" The emeralds narrowed at Duo as he walked up the stairs. "If you worked the way you run your mouth, you'd probably get a lot more done in the three weeks' time." Duo hissed and pretend to extend his claws. "If you'd chill out, the house wouldn't be picking on you." "Blow me." With that, Trowa headed toward his room. "I thought that's what Heero's for. . .oh, wait. . .he's ticked off at you." Duo called after his house guest. Still chuckling to himself, he turned back to Quatre. "What'd you end up making for dinner?" ******* The tension was thick enough to cut with a knife. Quatre glanced from Heero to Trowa from the corner of his eyes. They were the cause of the uneasy atmosphere. With dinner nearly done, neither of them had spoken a word to each other, or anyone else for that matter. Duo attempted to lighten things by bringing up amusing memories, but the lovers were too uptight to fully appreciate what he was trying to do. Not knowing what else to do, an uncomfortable silence had fallen over the five boys. Even Duo couldn't seem to break the torturous state. With Heero on one side of the table, and Trowa on the opposite, the other three couldn't help but wonder what had brought this about. Sure, that morning's argument was petty. . .as was the argument by the fountain and on the porch. It was the argument on Trowa's return that actually broke the limit. Though it had seemed venomous; looks had to be deceiving. If not, then they wouldn't have talked to each other to continue fighting through the rest of the day. The strain was so intense, that neither Heero or Trowa so much as looked at each other. "When are you two going to stop acting like children?" Wu Fei blurted, no longer able to take the silence. "This isn't like you guys." Without a word, both stood and headed in different directions. "Yeah, that's definitely going to solve the problem." The Chinese boy yelled after both of the retreating figures.
